I’m just going to go straight into it. Coming to America 2 was just okay. I don’t know how else to describe it. I’m not sure what exactly Eddie Murphy was thinking when he thought of this!

In the sequel, Prince Akeem, now King, has three daughters but no male heir. Then he finds out he deposited his semen in a prostitute the last time he was in Queens. That seed happens to be a 30 year old man now. Akeem then travels to Queens to bring his heir home, and of course he agrees because who doesn’t want to be a rich African prince. The film is predominantly set in Zamunda, with a hint of Queens, New York (it was actually shot in Tyler Perry’s studio in Atlanta + Rick Ross’ mansion, but that’s not why we are here).

When I saw that there was going to be a sequel, I didn’t expect much to be honest, as most sequels tend to be trash. I was right!

It was exciting and nostalgic to see the original cast 30 years later but as expected, it was just a lot of fanfare with an all star cast! Teyana Taylor, Morgan Freeman, Trevor Noah, Rotimi, Rick Ross???? What were they all doing there? Expensive props indeed!

It just made me think how we actually need more genuine African stories being told by real Africans and not black Americans with fake African accents. I’m looking forward to original African content from Amazon prime.

Loved the women empowerment angle though — in the spirit of women’s month. Girls fighting and all? I dig that!

We got a bit of Davido as well. That was a delight.

Enjoy it for what it is — a recycled story with no real substance. I think they should have just done a reunion party and broadcasted it to us live.

Coming to America 2 is available to watch on Amazon Prime. Rating 3/10.
