Palava! was painful to watch
Palava tells the story of Osa Wonder (Richard Mofe Damijo), a musician with five daughters (Bisola Aiyeola, Beverly Naya, Beverly Osu, Jemima Osunde and Ihuoma Linda Ejiofor) who is obsessed with women, and all the troubles that come with his vice.
The good bits
The only thing I liked about this film was Omawumi’s accent and overall character. Everything else was fluff.
Linda Ejiofor never really stands out to me in films, but she showed her depth in this film. The last time I saw this energy from her was in Tinsel. I’d love to see her in more challenging roles.
I really like Beverly Osu. She’s such a natural actress and I think she deserves more respect in Nollywood. Like Linda, she needs to be challenged a bit more for us to appreciate her craft!
Y’all know I’m a sucker for a good opening scene. It was a bit chaotic but my favorite bit was the punch and how everything just turned into a scene out of a comic book. The comic book narration was pretty nice but had nothing to do with the whole film. In most films where there’s an initial comic book narration, it remains consistent throughout the film but that wasn’t the case here.
The not so good bits
I can’t stand Nigerian films that have a musician at the centre that can neither sing nor play an instrument. We never saw Osa actually sing or go through a full performance. The whole thing just looked fake. In my opinion, the character did not need to be a musician, it was pointless, and had no relation to the entire film.
In what world is Iyabo Ojo, an assistant to Bisola??? I get the casting but I don’t get the assistant part, they could have done better with the roles.
I did not understand Itohan and her boyfriend — they were insignificant.
What was the point of this film again? The whole thing was cringeworthy.
Watch at your own peril! 2/10
